Unlike Anything You'd Expect

Other Renovation Projects

A couple of the things that people overlook is what isn’t seen. Heating and cooling is a big part of our green renovation and creates the comfort we need here at the museum. As you can see, the old heating unit defiantly needed to be replaced. We replaced the unit with a geothermal system for energy efficiency.

The basement also went through a restoration process by removing lead based paint along with putting in a new concrete floor. Structural changes were also needed to make sure that the building was safe.

The fire doors were also restored and reused in the buildings renovation. They were cleaned up and repainted. The doors are not in working condition, so if there is a fire in our facility, you will still be able to retreat.

The museum also has purchased wind energy. No we don’t have a 100 ft. wind turbine on our roof. The museum is a part of the Renewable Choice Energy Program. This program allows the museum to give back. We supported the wind farms by investing what we use for energy on yearly basis. This helps us offset the energy that we use in our building and allows the wind energy farms to expand.

Development of the land also allows us to use current structures instead of building on empty land. By reusing a building site, we can help cut back on land development which allows nature to expand.

Reusing the structure of the building instead of tearing down was the most cost efficient for us along with cutting down on waste materials going to the landfill. This also helped us preserved a historical building in Downtown Sioux Falls.
