This summer, we had the privilege of having a volunteer assist with various tasks around the Museum. We are very thankful of our volunteer, because this was one of our busiest summers ever. We thank Heidi, a high school student in Sioux Falls, who volunteered her time to serve the community and a nonprofit, the Museum of Visual Materials.
Heidi organizing the Craft Area.
Heidi helped with straightening up our Craft Area and cleaning brushes and palettes. Our Craft Area is open to the public for free and stocked with various arts and craft supplies to create whatever our guests would like. We were very busy with our regular kids’ activities. In addition to our regular activities, we held summer camps in the morning and afternoon that also benefited from having an additional helper. We also had various projects that the Museum needed assistance with and it was great to have an extra hand.
Before her last day with us, we wanted to learn more about why Heidi volunteers. Below is our short interview with her.
Summer volunteering would not be complete without a celebratory cookie cake!
Why did you want to volunteer?
Heidi: “It sounded fun to have something to do, to help out rather than pretty much sitting at home and not really doing anything. Volunteering here was to help out and get to know people.”
What’s the best part about volunteering at the Museum of Visual Materials?
Heidi: “The best part of volunteering here is that I got to know the people who work here and that I get to help more than just the staff, but the people who visit the Museum.”
Heidi and Education Director, Anna.
Why do you feel volunteering is important?
Heidi: “It helps people and you get to do something good without a reward like getting paid to do it or anything.”
We are so very thankful for Heidi and other volunteers who take time to serve their community. Looking to volunteer? Email Anna to learn more about regular volunteer opportunities at the Museum.
