In 2012, the idea of Giving Tuesday was formed. Giving Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday following the events of Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. The official website, GivingTuesday.org, states, “Entering its seventh year, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.”
This year, South Dakota is getting its first state-wide day of giving, which coincides with Giving Tuesday. On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, SD’s Day of Giving will take place. The goal of South Dakota Day of Giving is not only to raise funds for nonprofits, but to increase the number of donors who give across the state and build the capacity of South Dakota nonprofits to reach more people.
The Museum of Visual Materials is excited to be one of the nonprofits working with the group at South Dakota Gives, as both a nonprofit raising fund and awareness for their programs and a promoter of this 24-hour day of giving.
Miranda Ochocki, Executive Director of the Museum of Visual Materials stated, “We’re excited to see South Dakota have an official day to celebrate philanthropy and the work nonprofits do across our state.”

This year, the Museum’s goal is to raise money for a new building block table to serve the children who come to play and learn. The current table has seen a lot of attention over the past 5 years from the Museum's little builders but is now showing its age. The perfect solution was found in the MUtable, a tabletop that converts into multiple uses. The Museum is looking to raise $600 and reach 25 new donors for this year’s Giving Tuesday campaign. This goal will cover the costs of the tables as well as allow the Museum to purchase DUPLO blocks to allow smaller children the opportunity to have safe, creative play.

“The Museum strives to provide free and low-cost activities to inspire learning in children and encourage families to develop stronger bonds through play,” said Ochocki. “We have seen significant growth in attendance this past year. A new table to hold our LEGOS® and other blocks will enhance our guest's experience.”
Participating to help the Museum reach their goal is easy. Anytime on November 27, visit the Museum’s donation web page at www.sfmvm.com/donate, donate through the Museum’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/sfmvm, or stop by the Museum during business hours. You can also mail in a check in the days leading up to Giving Tuesday and designate it as a Giving Tuesday gift.
“We are thankful for the support of our community to continue to be a place for people to learn, play, create, and celebrate.”
