You may have seen posters around town or an advertisement on our website and wondered, “What is Art Journaling?” Simply put, art journaling is the process of combining art and words on paper to express your feelings and a way to create your life in words and pictures. Cathy Malchiodi describes it this way; “Art Journaling is about having a visual conversation with yourself.” The main difference between art journaling and keeping a diary is the focus is on the process and not the outcome.
At the Museum of Visual Materials, we offer an art journaling class monthly on the second Tuesday. This two-hour class provides the opportunity to learn techniques and apply them in practice sessions. All supplies are provided except the journal itself. What type of journal you want to use is an individual decision. It is best to bring a wire bound journal suitable for watercolor and other types of media. You will be introduced and taught to use many new and different types of media in this class, including multiple types of watercolors, gesso, embossing, acrylics, gouache paints, stamps, collage and many others.
Art journaling truly is for everyone and usually loved the most by people with no artistic ability. All you need to do is pick a topic to journal about let your imagination run wild. There are no special skills or talent needed. You can join any class at any time in the year. We have both male and female participants and ages ranging from 12 to 62. Come join us.
