For July’s Craft Night we created decorative yarn balls. These are perfect to place in a decorative bowl for centerpieces or add strings to them for a hanging decoration. Grab some yarn to match your home or create seasonal yarn bowls for special holidays.
Warning! I found the Pinterest project to be quite messy. I ended up having to give the balls multiple tries to have 3 balls turn out to my liking. So be patient in case you have to try it out a couple of times. Good Luck!
Supplies:
Balloons
White school glue- about one bottle per yarn ball
Yarn
Plastic cups
Paper plates
Scissors
Step One:
Blow up balloons to the size of balls you would like the yarn balls to be.
Step Two:
String the yarn all around each balloon. When getting started you may find it easier to tie the beginning of yarn to another piece of yarn for security. You want to have enough string around your ball to form a good shape, but not too much string where the string will be too heavy to hold up on its own without balloon.
Step Three:
Place the balloons that are all stringed up with yarn on a plastic cup with a paper plate underneath. It’s about to get messy! Pour glue over each balloon of yarn. Use your hands to cover each peice of string with glue.
I have heard of people using wood glue or mod podge. I just used a little less than a bottle of white school glue for each ball and it worked out fine!
Step Four:
Wait until the next day for the yarn balloons to dry. If you are letting them dry on top of the cup, make sure you rotate yarn balloons, so the part of the ball that is in the cup will get some air to dry. Then pop the balloon and peel the latex off from inside of your string ball. Your string ball should be flexible enough in case you need to move some strings around to get the correct shape.
